Steve Brantley has worked in economic development for the past 34 years, with experience at the state and local government level, and in the private sector.  He has spent the past 11 years as the Director of Orange County Economic Development office, and is responsible for a range of strategies that help promote Orange County’s local economy.   The Orange County Economic Development department works to increase the County’s tax base and job opportunities by recruiting of new businesses, supporting existing businesses, promoting a Small Business Loan program for local start-up firms, engaging in entrepreneurial ventures such as Orange County’s partnership with Chapel Hill to fund and create the “LAUNCH” innovation center, and pursuing agricultural economic development.   Activities include the competitive recruitment of the international Japanese candy company, Morinaga America Foods, the factory expansion of ABB, the recruitment of Medline Industries' 1.2 million sq. ft. medical products distribution center, the recruitment of  Thermo Fisher Scientific's $240 million medical products manufacturing center, and the health care firm Well Dot to downtown Chapel Hill. Currently, he is assisting 5 spec industrial developers with their plans to build at least 6 million sq. ft. of light industrial and distribution produce in Orange County.


Prior to joining Orange County, he worked in the North Carolina Department of Commerce for 23 years as a Senior International Economic Developer, where he was responsible for recruiting new business and industrial facilities to North Carolina from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China.  Typical clients included automotive, textile and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, R&D laboratories and office headquarters.  At the North Carolina Department of Commerce, he organized and helped lead over a dozen State recruiting missions for 4 N.C. Governors and 5 Commerce Secretaries, and made nearly 50 recruiting trips to the Far East.  He was previously employed in commercial banking with Credit Suisse in New York and Chicago, and with BB&T in Greensboro.


His educational background includes having attended the Virginia Military Institute, completed course work with the University of Maryland’s overseas program while serving in the military, and earning a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from UNC Chapel Hill in 1984.  Brantley has lived in Orange County for the past 30 years with his Japanese wife Noriko and two adult children.  He served 6 years in the United States Navy, to include 4 years at Misawa Air Base in northern Japan, working in meteorology and anti-submarine warfare.
