Event Details

Join us on November 6 to network with your Wilmington Regional NCEDA colleagues! In addition to stellar networking, attendees will hear welcoming remarks from Dr. Aswani Volety, Chancellor of UNC Wilmington as well as a presentation on “Generative AI's Impact on the Workplace and Workforce Development” by Dr. Lane Freeman, Director of Online Learning for the North Carolina Community College System.

Lane Freeman, leveraging his extensive experience in educational technology, presents 'Generative AI's Impact on the Workplace and Workforce Development.' This session reveals how AI is reshaping the workplace and will require adapting educational and workforce development approaches to meet changing talent needs. The presentation will explore the anticipated changes in the workplace from the greater usage of AI and how educational institutions at all levels must prepare our college graduates/workforce (university, community college, existing workers) for these anticipated changes AI will bring to the workplace, especially in sectors that are important to our region and state such as healthcare, life sciences, and manufacturing. This benefits-oriented approach empowers economic developers and other attendees to navigate the AI-driven landscape confidently.

Attendees will benefit from hearing the following:

  • Overview of AI (what it is, who is leading development) and the rise of generative AI
  • Types of jobs that will be affected by AI (reduced, eliminated, augmented)
  • Increased focus on subject matter experts to edit/analyze/interpret AI deliverables
  • How deployment of AI solutions may help address current and anticipated workforce shortages
  • Examples of how AI may be used, for instance, in a business, educational, healthcare, and manufacturing setting
  • Perspective on how educational systems (K-12, university, and especially community colleges) will need to adapt to address AI and to incorporate AI usage into coursework and training
